Panthers Steal Win from Lightning Men in Final Seconds

Box Score

Dec. 10, 2011

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y.
- Rashawn McCarthy did a little bit of everything in the final seconds of Saturday's game against Lehman College, and because of it, Old Westbury snatched a 64-63 victory away from a stunned Lightning team at New Roc City on Saturday afternoon as part of the Fourth Annual CUNY Coaches vs. Cancer Basketball Classic.

With the Panthers trailing 63-60 following two free throws by Lehman's Phil Ductan, McCarthy's layup cut the deficit to one with just over one minute to play.  After empty possessions by both teams Old Westbury's Jamal Little was sent to the line where he converted his first attempt to tie the game at 63.  Little missed the second attempt, but McCarthy was there for the huge offensive rebound.  A foul by Kelvin Gil sent McCarthy to the charity stripe where he made one of two to give the Panthers a one point lead.  Mathias Raggiotto got off a desperation three-point attempt for the Lightning but could not convert.

The stunning loss negated a quality second half performance by the Lightning, who erased a six point halftime deficit to build an eight-point advantage of its own.  Lehman's run to take the lead out of the intermission was spurred on by energetic play off the bench from Sebastian Pessoa and an array of shots by Raggiotto, who caught fire from the outside to score 12 straight points as the Lightning grabbed a 48-45 lead.

A layup by George Nimmons several minutes later pushed the score to 54-46 in favor of the Lightning  before the Panthers made their decisive run to steal the win.

In the loss Lehman was led by Raggiotto's 19 point,11-rebound effort.  Pessoa produced a season-best game of 16 points and six rebounds in 24 minutes of action.  Ductan added 12 points for the Lightning.

McCarthy was high man for the Panthers, finishing with 12 points.

The Lightning men are back in action on December 14 when the team travels to New Jersey City University to make up a contest postponed from a week ago.
