In the first City University of New York Athletic Conference match of the season, the Hunter Hawks earned a 3-1 (25-20, 25-17, 21-25, 29-27) win over the host Lehman Lightning on Tuesday night.
Trailing 24-20 in the fourth set, Lehman rallied to tie the match at 24-24, and eventually took a 27-26 lead with hopes of extending to a fifth set. However, the Hawks captured the next three points to take the match.
R.J. LeBlanc paced the Lightning with 21 kills.
Miguel Gallardo (18 assists) and
Nate Martin (19 assists) distributed the ball to their teammates effectively while
Luis Colon recorded 11 digs.
The victorious Hawks were led by the attacking trio of Braien Otsla (13 kills), Eric Barty (12 kills, 10 digs), and Marcin Polak (10 kills, 12 digs), who were the beneficiaries of Stanley Martinez's passing prowess (43 assists). Hunter's front line also turned back seven Lehman attempts at the net with Otsla particularly effective with five blocks.
With the win, Hunter improves to 2-5 overall, 1-0 in the CUNYAC, while Lehman falls to 1-4, 0-1 in the CUNYAC.
The Lightning returns to action immediately when it travels to New Jersey to face Ramapo College on Wednesday night.
