On Tuesday night at the APEX, the Lehman Lightning did what teams who fashion themselves among the top do – handle opponents that are clearly overmatched.
The Lightning wasted no time in dispatching Medgar Evers (25-14, 25-14, 25-9) and St. Joseph's Brooklyn (25-13, 25-9, 25-2), as it downed both teams in straight sets.
Lehman was outstanding from the service line in both matches, but particularly during the second match against the Bears when
Miguel Gallardo showed what type of weapon he can be when not setting up his teammates. The freshman from the Bronx fired 15 aces, including 10 in a row at one point, as the Lightning jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the final set. As a team, Lehman slammed 29 total aces against St. Joseph's, with newcomer
Victor Garcia notching his first four of the season.
Gallardo was almost as tough in the first game against the Cougars as he boomed four service aces to go along with his 21 assists.
R.J. LeBlanc led the team with seven kills against Medgar Evers and also tallied six aces of his own. Combining both matches, LeBlanc recorded 14 kills.
Lehman's final three games of the season will all come against quality opponents, beginning with Mt. Saint Vincent College on Thursday, a team that took the Lightning to five sets on February 11.
