Trio Leads Lightning to 87-72 Win Over John Jay

Box Score

Jan. 6, 2012

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Lightning trio of George Nimmons, Mathias Raggiotto and Phil Ductan combined for 66 points and the Lightning put forth its highest scoring output of the season in defeating John Jay 87-72 to move to 7-7 overall.

Nimmons was high man for the Lightning with 25 points on an efficient 8-of-12 from the field, including 4-of-4 from downtown.  The Lehman junior also added nine rebounds, five assists, three steals and committed only one turnover.  Mathias Raggiotto added his sixth double-double of the season with 21 points and 14 boards, while Phil Ductan contributed 20 points and six assists in his return to the lineup.

Lehman held a distinct edge on the glass, outrebounding John Jay 49-32.  In addition to Raggiotto's 14 caroms, senior Patryk Odedina chipped in 11 rebounds of his own and also tossed in 11 points.

The Lightning triumvirate of Nimmons, Raggiotto and Ductan was nearly unstoppable in the first half as they combined for all but two of the points on the scoreboard.  Only a pair of free throws by Kelvin Gil midway through the half prevented them from completely commanding the scoresheet.

Leading 23-22 following a three-pointer by Joseph Padell, the Lightning manufactured a 17-6 run to close out the half, highlighted by 11 points from Ductan that left Lehman ahead 40-28.

In the second half, it was more of the same as Nimmons, Raggiotto and Ductan continued their fine play and were joined at the dance by Odedina.  A layup by Nimmons with 16:52 left gave Lehman its largest lead of the game at 46-29.  The Lightning would match that 17-point advantage two minutes later on a three-pointer by Raggiotto.

The Bloodhounds took until there was just under seven minutes remaining to get the deficit under 10, which came when Jamar Harry nailed a jumper to cut the Lehman lead to 67-59.  A Nimmons free throw and Sebastian Pessoa's only basket of the game pushed it back to 11, only to have Harry convert on a layup and Isaiah Holman knock down a free throw to once again get the deficit under 10.

With the game teetering in the balance, Lehman produced a 7-0 spurt on two Nimmons free throws, a tip-in by Odedina, two more free throws from Raggiotto and a layup by Ductan to balloon its lead to 78-62 with 4:21 left.

John Jay answered with a 7-0 run of its own but ultimately was thwarted by several baskets from Raggiotto and a lack of time left on the clock.

The Lightning will look to improve on its 3-0 conference record on January 11 when it travels to Baruch for the second of what is a stretch of six consecutive CUNYAC contests.
