Box Score
NEW YORK, N.Y. – The sixth seeded Lehman College men's soccer team had its season come to an abrupt end in dramatic fashion, losing to the #3 seed CCNY Beavers in penalty kicks. Officially, the game's result is a 1-1 tie, but CCNY advances in the 2012 CUNY Athletic Conference/Applebee's Men's Soccer Championships on PK's, 3-0. The game was held at Randall's Island.
CCNY will next face the winner of the @2 Brooklyn/#7 Hunter match in the Semifinals on Saturday, October 27, at 7:00 p.m.
Tonight, CCNY scored the game's first goal of the game in the 38th minute, when Kazuhide Kosugi scored on a one-on-one situation and beat Lehman keeper Frantz Enama (Bronx, N.Y./Lyceum Kennedy), who was making just his third appearance in goal this season. The score remained 1-0 at the half.
Just three minutes into the second half, Lehman got the equalizer when senior Oumar Niang (Bronx, N.Y./Manhattan Center) scored his 13th goal of the season on a breakaway.
As the second half progressed, both teams had opportunities, but could not score. The game became more physical as time went on. In the 89th minute, Lehman had its best chance at victory, but freshman Aleh Kazak (Minsk, Belsrus) took a blast that hit the crossbar and bounced back into play.
Play advanced into overtime. Lehman carried play, and got off several good shots. Nearly six minutes into the first overtime, the game reached its boiling point. CCNY's Kosugi was once again in the spotlight, as he fouled Thaddeus Ikwuka (Bronx, N.Y./All Hallows), who objected to the foul. Ikwuka turned and faced his opponent, and the CCNY bench cleared. The officials were forced to book five players with red cards: Ikwuka, Kosugi, and three CCNY players who came off the bench.
Near the end of the first overtime, Enama made a strong save to send the game into the second overtime. The second overtime saw wild action back-and-forth action. Both teams had scoring opportunities, and both keepers were up to the task.
And so it was, that for the second time in as many years, penalty kicks would decide the fate of the Lightning.
CCNY would shoot first, with their keeper, Tayfun Kucuk converting his chance. Lehman's first shooter was the striker Niang, whose shot sailed wide of the target.
The second round saw CCNY score, putting junior Momar Thiam (New York, N.Y.) in the hot seat. His offering was stopped by CCNY's Kucuk, and CCNY led 2-0 after two rounds.
In the third round, CCNY once again scored, setting up a do or die situation for Lehman. Sophomore captain Carlos Ribeiro (Bronx, N.Y./Bronx International) stepped up, and took a blast towards the keeper's left.
Kucuk dove, extended his arms, and made the game-clinching save. Destiny was not on Lehman's side this year, and CCNY advanced on PK's, 3-0.
Lehman finishes the season at 4-13-2.
