RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Lehman College men's basketball team used a 13-0 run late in the first half en route to a 63-51 defeat of Vaughn College on Tuesday night, in a game played at the College of Mount Saint Vincent. Lehman is now 3-0 on the season, while Vaughn is now 2-2.
The Lightning opened up a 17-point lead with 1:25 to play before halftime. Junior Yve Jay Modi (Clarkstown South/Ramat Gan, Israel) started that 13-0 run with back-to-back buckets, while classmate Erasmo Soto (Harlem, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) had five points during that span.
Jared Ndiba scored in the waning moments of the first half for the Warriors, and the score stood at 37-22 at the break.
In the second half, the lead swelled back to 17 points at 46-29, when junior Stanley Stephens (New York, N.Y./Manhattan Center) grabbed an offensive rebound and made the put-back with 13:24 to play.
Vaughn was able to cut the lead to as few as seven points with 5:12 to play, taking advantage of stale shooting by the Lightning. Lehman was able to make its free throws down the stretch, and won the game by 12.
Lehman was led by junior Kelvin Gil (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes), who scored a game-high 26 points, while Stephens recorded a double-double with 12 points and as many rebounds. Mahdi Macbahi paced Vaughn with 17 points and 26 rebounds.
The Lightning will open the CUNYAC portion of the schedule in its next game, playing at Medgar Evers College on November 27.
