Lightning Closes Out Regular Season With Hard Fought 86-84 OT Win

Box Score

Feb. 14, 2012

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. - More often than not this season the Lehman men's basketball team has found itself in a tight game late in the second half, and Tuesday night against Berkeley College (NJ) was no different as neither team ever led by more than nine points before the Lightning eventually pulled out an 86-84 victory in overtime.

That nine point lead came with 4:37 to play in regulation in favor of the Lightning, but the team could not hold on to it.  Led by Daniel Waynick, who pumped in a game-high 29 points, the Knights clawed their way back to within three with less than 30 seconds to play.  Following a timeout by head coach Anthony Calabrese, freshman Dakwan Simmons buried an open three-pointer to tie the game at 76, ultimately sending the game to overtime when neither team could convert in the final seconds.

Berkeley got on the board first in the extra session on a basket by Waynick.  An 8-2 spurt by the Lightning helped open up an 84-80 lead before two free throws by Waynick and a bucket by Davon Boyd tied the score at 84 all.  Free throws by George Nimmon and Phil Ductan pushed the lead to two points.  The Knights had a chance to tie but committed a costly turnover that sealed the game for Lehman.

The Lightning received a big game from Kelvin Gil, who scored 23 points, including five three-pointers.  His scoring outburst was a welcome sight and matched his season-high, which was set back on November 29 against City College of New York.  Ductan also produced one of his best scoring games of the season with 19 points and five assists.  Sophomore Stanley Stephens provided a spark off the bench for Lehman with 12 points before fouling out.

Lehman will have three days to prepare for its CUNYAC Championship quarterfinal game against Medgar Evers, which is set for 12 p.m. on Saturday afternoon at Hostos Community College.
