Box Score

BRONX, N.Y. - On paper it was a mismatch.

Number 12 ranked Baruch College against an inexperienced Lightning team that, despite playing well in sweeping its two contests at Saturday's multi-match, had not yet faced an opponent the caliber of the Bearcats.

The Lightning more than held its own on Wednesday night at the APEX, though, giving the Bearcats all they could handle despite losing in straight sets, 25-21, 25-18, 25-18.

In the match's opening set the Lightning battled back from an early deficit to take its first lead at 12-11, a string of five straight points that led to a timeout by Baruch head coach Allison Stack.  Leading 21-19, Lehman watched as Baruch reeled off the final six points, however, to claim the first set.

With the potential to come out deflated, the Lightning did anything but in the second set, building a 10-6 lead.  Once again, though, the Bearcats battled back.  Baruch took its first lead of the set at 11-10, and following a quick tying point by the Lightning that made it 11-11, never trailed again.  Lehman was able to knot the set one more time at 17-17, but the team could never fully take command as the Bearcats stamped out the upstart Lightning by scoring eight of the last nine points.

Bouyed by their 2-0 lead, the Bearcats stormed out of the gate in the third set by blitzing the Lightning with eight straight points.  The resilient Lightning men got as close as 12-11, but ultimately were put down by the Bearcats.

With its win, Baruch improves to 3-0 in the City University of New York Athletic Conference while the Lightning falls to 2-1.

Lehman was led by Brian Francisco's seven kills, while Luis Colon added 10 digs.  Miguel Gallardo collected 19 assists.

The Lightning's next match will be on Saturday, February 11 when the team battles Cooper Union.
