Two Straight for Lightning Volleyball Over CUNYAC Opponents

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Lehman men's volleyball team spotted City College of New York a two sets to none lead before roaring back to capture the final three sets, picking up its second consecutive conference victory to improve to 7-3 in CUNYAC on Thursday evening.

Brian Francisco recorded his second-highest total of kills on the season with 16 while hitting at a .312 percentage.  Luis Colon (11) and Manuel Bonilla (10) joined him with double digits in kills.  Sophomore Miguel Gallardo tossed up 40 assists and tied for the team lead with nine digs.

The Lightning came perilously close to seeing the match end in straight sets as the team staved off defeat despite CCNY needing only two points to win in the third set.  At 23 all, Francisco notched a big kill and then delivered Lehman at least one more set of play with a service ace to pull out the win.

In the fourth Lehman fell behind 19-14 only to tie the set at 19-19 on a kill by Orlando Vargas.  Several mistakes by the Beavers coupled with kills from Colon and Gallardo allowed the visitors to squeak out the 25-23 victory.

The fifth and deciding set was won 15-11 and was all Lehman following a brief tie at 4-4.  The team maintained at least a two point lead for 13 of the remaining points played.

Lehman will take part in a CUNYAC multi-match on Saturday when it will gets its first look at Hunter College in addition to squaring off against Medgar Evers.  Both matches will take place at York College.
