Men's Volleyball Season Ends At Hands Of Brooklyn

Box Score

BRONX, N.Y. - In a match of the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds in the CUNYAC/Con Edison men's volleyball championships, the visiting Brooklyn Bulldogs pulled off the shocker, defeating Lehman in straight sets to advance to Thursday's semifinal action.

The shocking element wasn't so much that Brooklyn was victorious - despite Lehman having taken both regular season matches - but the manner in which the Bulldogs got to the outcome.  The visitors appeared to be the hungrier bunch, displaying an excitement throughout the match that was missing from the Lightning and that was spurred on by a vocal Bulldogs rooting section.

Lehman fell behind for much of the first set before gaining its first lead at 16-15.  The Lightning later had a 23-22 advantage but was unable to put away the Bulldogs, who earned the 25-23 first set win.

The second set proved to be a thriller with no more than a point separating the two over the final 14 points scored.  Brooklyn pulled out the set at 29-27 on kills by Alexander Shlivko and David Dimitruk.

Sensing the upset, Brooklyn never allowed Lehman to think it might be able to prolong the match.  Taking its first lead of the set at 4-3 the Bulldogs prevented the Lightning from getting any closer than two points the rest of the way in winning 25-20.

Brian Francisco led the way with 16 kills in the loss, while Miguel Gallardo chipped in 26 assists for a Lightning team that finishes the season at 14-13.
