Men's Basketball Falls to Second Place John Jay, 83-74

BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College men's basketball team shot 43.3% from the field, but it was not enough as visiting John Jay College took the win, 83-74. John Jay remains in second place in the CUNYAC at 5-1, while Lehman drops to 1-4, and eighth place.

Up-and-down play dominated the first half, with both teams running and gunning. John Jay scored the first points of the game just five seconds in, and held the lead throughout. Several times Lehman cut the lead to one point, including at the 7:34 mark, when junior Kelvin Gil (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) made an unassisted jumper. Gil would end the half with a jumper with just 20 ticks remaining, and the Bloodhounds took a 45-36 lead at the break.

As the second half started, junior forward Stanley Stephens (New York, N.Y./Manhattan Center) made a free throw to bring the score to 47-37, just 1:20 in. From there, John Jay shot the lights out, and quickly doubled the lead. John Jay led by as many as 22 points before Lehman rallied. The Lightning refused to yield, and pressed on.

Lehman managed to get as close as nine points in the waning moments, falling 83-74.

For the game, Stephens was the top scorer for Lehman with 11 points, followed by freshman Driton Hasangjekaj (Bronx, N.Y./DeWitt Clinton) and junior Erasmo Soto (Harlem, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman), who each had ten. Hasangjekaj led the team in rebounds with seven.

For John Jay, Isaiah Holman made nine of his 16 shots for a game-high 26 points. Seven of his makes were from three-point range. Kris Owens added 13 points.

The Lightning will host City College on Saturday, January 12, at 3:00 p.m. Lehman will be hosting Alumni Day that day, as dozens of alums have already registered to return to the APEX. An Alumni Game will take place at 2:00 p.m., with a formal reception to follow the men's game, around 5:00 p.m.
