QUEENS, N.Y. – The Lehman College men's basketball team dropped a CUNY Athletic Conference game to York College on Friday night, 72-70. This is Lehman's sixth loss by six points or less on the season.
Lehman (6-11, 1-7 CUNYAC) held the lead with just 2:47 to go in the game, before York's Du'quan Lawson made a layup with 2:08 to play to tie the score. Lehman would come up empty on the next five possessions, as York (8-8, 4-4 CUNYAC) built a four point lead, 71-67, with 17 seconds left.
Junior sniper Kelvin Gil (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal hayes) drained a three-pointer with just nine seconds left, and the margin was down to just one point. York's Donald Rodriguez made one free throw to move the lead to two points, setting up Lehman's final possession, with just five ticks left.
The Lightning would not get a shot off before time expired, and the host Cardinals took the win.
On the night, Lehman held York to 36.1% shooting from the field. York, however, managed to convert 22 free throws on 37 attempts.
For Lehman, Gil had a game-high 20 points, making six out of 12 three-point shots. Senior guard Phil Ductan (Bronx, N.Y./Kima) added 11 points and seven assists, while junior guard Erasmo Soto (Harlem, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) had eight points.
The Lightning will take a few days off prior to the next game, on Wednesday, January 23, when Medgar Evers College comes to the APEX for a 7:00 p.m. tip.
