BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College men's basketball team took advantage of a fast track, and ran their way to a 91-48 win over visiting Cooper Union on Thursday evening. Stanley Stephens scored 10 of his team-high 14 points in the first half, as the Lightning built an insurmountable 51-24 lead at halftime.
Lehman (6-5, 1-1 CUNYAC) played its last non-conference game of the season, and had an offensive explosion, scoring a season-high 91 points.
The Lightning never trailed in the game. Senior Quaseem Weems (Bronx, N.Y./Beacon) scored the first points of the game on a put back on the team's first possession. After Cooper Union tied the score on a layup, Lehman went on a 14-0 run to break the game wide open. Junior forward Kelvin Gil (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) have five points in that run, including a three-pointer.
Lehman built a 29-point lead midway through the first half, leading 41-12 on a layup by newcomer Driton Hasangjekaj (Bronx, N.Y./DeWitt Clinton). Hasansjekaj joined the team at the semester break, and played in his first game of the season tonight.
Lehman would eventually lead by as many as 50 points late in the second half, on a layup by Olu Williams (Bronx, N.Y./DeWitt Clinton).
For the game, 14 different players took the court for Lehman, of which 11 scored. Stephens (New York, N.Y./Manhattan Center) and Weems each had double doubles. Stephens went for 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Weems added 11 points and 10 rebounds.
For the game, Lehman shot 45.6% from the floor, and held Cooper Union to just 31.5% shooting. The Lightning out-rebounded the Hawks 50-25, and committed just 11 turnovers, to Cooper Union's 22.
The Lightning will see only CUNYAC competition for the remainder of the season, and will travel to face Brooklyn College on Saturday, January 5, at 3:00 p.m. The next home date for Lehman is January 8, when the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island come to the Bronx.
