Men's Basketball Falls 62-58 at Brooklyn College

Box Score

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Lehman College men's basketball team played well, but dropped a 62-58 decision at Brooklyn College on Saturday afternoon. Brooklyn improves to 2-2 in the CUNYAC with the win, and is 3-6 overall. Lehman is now 6-6, and 1-2 in conference play.

The game was tight throughout, and the Bulldogs held a 56-55 lead with 2:15 remaining. BC pushed that lead to four points, before junior forward Kelvin Gil (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) made a tough jumper, was fouled, and completed the traditional three-point play. With 42.3 seconds to go, the Brooklyn lead was back to one point, 59-58.

As Brooklyn inbounded the ball, Gil struck again, stealing the ball, giving Lehman new life. The Lightning now had the ball, and was down by just one point, with 30 seconds to play.

As action resumed, senior point guard Phil Ductan (Bronx, N.Y./Kima) dribbled himself into trouble, and turned the ball over with only 7.9 seconds to go. Lehman did not get a shot off.

Lehman was forced to foul, putting BC's Steven Grant on the free throw line, shooting two. He made the first, but missed the second. The contested rebound went to BC, and Steven Diaz made a layup for the final score, 62-58.

On the afternoon, Lehman's defense played very well, holding Brooklyn to just 32.2% from the field. Lehman also forced 21 Bulldog turnovers.

However, Lehman's offensive woes continued. As a team, Lehman shot 44.9% from the field, a marked improvement. But 29 turnovers thwarted any momentum the Lightning had.

Gil led all scorers with 22 points, adding three assists, three rebounds, and as many steals. Junior guard Erasmo Soto (Harlem, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) added ten points, and junior forward Stanley Stephens (New York, N.Y./Manhattan Center) chipped in nine. Senior forward Quaseem Weems (Bronx, N.Y./Beacon) was the only player in the game in double figures in rebounding, grabbing ten.

The Lightning are in the midst of a brutal stretch, which sees four CUNYAC games in a span of eight days. The next three are all at home, including Tuesday's matchup with the College of Staten Island. The men will tipoff around 7:15 p.m.
