NEW YORK, N.Y. – As the snow and sleet fell outside, shots were falling inside the Max Stern Athletic Center, as the Lehman College men's basketball team earned a non-conference road win late on Saturday night, besting host Yeshiva University, 67-53. Lehman has now won all three games of this road swing, and improves to 6-3 overall. Yeshiva falls to 3-6.
Lehman came ready to play, jumping out to a 15-4 lead, five and a half minutes into the game. Junior Brandon Stolz (Bronx, N.Y./Harry Truman) scored the first five points of the game for Lehman, and added a fast-break layup during that decisive run. The lead was up to as many as 16 points with 6:35 to play, when senior Kelvin Gil (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) had a fast-break layup. Yeshiva would go on to score the final eight points of the half, for a respectable 30-23 halftime score.
In the second half, a steal by sophomore Jerrome Jones (Bronx, N.Y./Mt. Vernon) led to a thunderous dunk by junior forward Kevan Proctor (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grand Street Campus), pushing the lead back to double digits, 40-29, and the rout was on. From then on, the lead never dropped below ten points.
Defense proved vital for the Lightning, who forced 19 turnovers, leading to 24 points. Lehman's ability to push the ball out helped as well, running the fast break for 22 points.
On the day, Stolz led the team with 21 points and six steals, while senior Stanley Stephens (New York, N.Y./Manhattan Center) scored 17. Jones had 11 points and six assists, while Proctor added six points and 11 boards.
Lehman will take a break for final exams, then will host Colorado College and Rutgers-Camden on December 28 and 29, as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament at Lehman College.
