BRONX, N.Y. – A second half rally fell short for the Lehman College men's basketball team, who dropped an 85-78 decision to visiting Brooklyn College on Friday night. With the win, Brooklyn is now 6-6 in the CUNY Athletic Conference, and 8-12 overall, while the Lightning drop to 2-10 in the conference, and 7-14 overall.
The Lightning got off to a hot start, taking a 16-8 led at the 13:53 mark, when junior Kelvin Gil (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) stuck a three pointer, with an assist from Driton Hasangjekaj (Bronx, N.Y./DeWitt Clinton). Lehman would stay out front, as Gil hit another three ball at the 11:04 mark, making the score 19-13. BC would then explode, going on a 15-1 run, taking their own eight point lead, with 5:50 to play in the half. Brooklyn would hold a six point advantage before Lehman scored the final nine points of the half, taking a 33-30 lead at the break.
The second half saw Lehman struggle early, as the Bulldogs took advantage. Brooklyn would score the first 13 points of the stanza, on the back of Egzon Gjonbalaj, who had 11 of those points. The Brooklyn lead would hover around the ten-point mark for most of the second half, though the Lightning would cut it to as few as seven points for the final.
On the evening, five different players reached double digits in scoring for Lehman, including junior Ryan Alvarado (New York, N.Y./Urban Peace), who had 15. Hasangjekaj and junior Stanley Stephens (New York, N.Y./Manhattan Center) each had 14, followed by classmate Erasmo Soto (Harlem, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) and Gil, who had 11 and ten, respectively.
Lehman will next take the hardwood on Monday, February 4, when they travel to face the College of Staten Island for a 7:00 p.m. tip.
