BRONX, N.Y. - Freshman Driton Hasangjekaj registered a game-high 17 points, but it was not enough, as the Lehman College men's basketball team fell to Baruch College, 69-58, on Sunday afternoon at the APEX at Lehman College. The Bearcats move to 18-5, 13-2 in CUNYAC play, while the Lightning drop to 7-17, 2-13 in conference action.
Today's game was originally on the schedule for Friday, February 8, but Winter Storm Nemo forced the game to be postponed to today, February 10.
Baruch's Brian McMahon earned the John Conboy Memorial Award, presented annually to the Most Valuable Player in the second Baruch-Lehman matchup. Conboy played at Baruch before transferring to Lehman, where he earned his degree.
Both teams made multiple surges in the opening stanza. Hasangjekaj (Bronx, N.Y./DeWitt Clinton) made a layup with 14:36 remaining in the first, capping a 6-0 Lightning spurt. The Bearcats countered with a 13-0 run in a 2:57 span, taking a 17-6 edge with 11:37 remaining.
Lehman responded with an 8-0 spurt, slicing the deficit to three, 17-14, at the 9:44 mark. Hasangjekaj started the Lighting run, as he drained a three-pointer, before finding Anthony Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y./Roosevelt) in the right-corner for his own three ball. Senior guard Phil Dunctan (Bronx, N.Y./Kima) drove the lane and made a tough layup on Lehman's next possession, and the lead was down to three.
From there, Baruch stepped up their defensive intensity, holding Lehman to just 32.3% shooting. By contrast, Baruch shot 51.1%.
For Lehman, Hasangjekaj had a good shooting day, going 7-for-11 from the field. Other major contributors for the Lightning were junior Stanley Stephens (New York, N.Y./Manhattan Center), who added 13 points and eight rebounds. Junior Kelvin Gil (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) and senior Quaseem Weems (Bronx, N.Y./Beacon) chipped in with six points apiece.
Lehman College concludes their 2012-2013 campaign by hosing York College on Tuesday, February 12, on Senior Night. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
