Quaseem Weems netted a career-high 24 points and
Anthony Rodriguez added 16 points, but it was not enough as the Lehman College men's basketball team fell to York (N.Y.) College, 70-63, on Tuesday evening at the APEX. The Lightning concluded the 2012-2013 season with a 7-18 overall, 2-14 CUNY Athletic Conference record, while the Cardinals upped their record to 11-14, 7-9 in conference action.
Midway through the first half, Rodriguez drained two treys to push the Lightning lead to seven, 17-10, with 10:44 on the clock. On the evening, the senior shot at a 40% clip from beyond the three-point line, making 4-of-10 treys. York went on a 7-0 run that tied the game at 17-17 at the 8:44 mark, until Weems (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) converted on a fast-break layup putting the hosts up by two. Yve Jay Modi (Ramat-Gan, Israel/Clarkstown South) who found Weems in stride for the layup.
At the 2:10 mark of the first, Rodriguez nailed a triple, off of a feed by senior
Phil Ductan (Bronx, N.Y./Kima), which capped five unanswered points by him, giving Lehman a 30-22 edge.
The Cardinals began the second half on an 18-9 run, turning a four-point halftime deficit, to a 44-39 lead with 11:32 left. Weems' conventional three-point play with 10:51 on the clock, trimmed the York lead to two, 44-42. Weems went 8-for-11 from the floor and racked up 16 rebounds. In the next 6:17 minutes of play, Lehman missed their next six shots from the field, which saw York's lead climb to 12, 61-49 at the 2:06 mark. Two consecutive three-pointers by Weems and junior
Kelvin Gil (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes), respectively, saw York's lead cut to four, 67-63, with 24 seconds left. Three straight made free throws by the Cardinals put the game out of reach.
Lehman shot 40.4% (21-of-52) in the game, and grabbed 43 rebounds.
Prior to tip-off, the three seniors (Weems, Rodriguez, and Ductan) were honored for their contributions to the Lehman men's basketball programs.
