Box Score BRONX, N.Y. - The Lehman College men's volleyball team breezed past St. Joseph's of Brooklyn in three sets by scores of 25-17, 25-12, and 25-10. The non-conference match-up at the APEX was held on Saturday afternoon. The Lightning has now won two straight matches, and three of its last four, evening the season record at 9-9, while the Bears dip to 2-7 on the season.
Originally, today was to have been a tri-match involving Regis College from suburban Boston. However, the Pride were unable to make the trip due to the snow storm.
Senior
Brian Francisco (Bronx, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) led the Lightning attack, as he recorded game-highs with six service aces and ten digs. The senior also posted a .538 hitting percentage and notched a team-high eight kills. Other Lehman contributors were freshman
Ibrahima Souare (Bronx, N.Y./Social Justice), who had a six kill performance, posting a game-high .750 hitting percentage, junior
Manuel Bonilla (Bronx, N.Y./Walton), who had five kills, and senior
Luis Colon (Bronx, N.Y./John F. Kennedy), who marked 22 set assists.
In the opening set, the Lightning jumped out to an 11-5 lead on a Francisco kill. Lehman proceeded to go on an 8-3 spurt, courtesy of two more Francisco kills, extending their lead to 19-8. Both teams exchanged points until junior
Andrew Morejon (New Rochelle, N.Y. /New Rochelle) ended the opening game with a kill off of a Colon assist.
In the second set, five Lehman kills ignited the hosts to an 11-4 margin. The Lightning grew the lead to ten, 17-7, courtesy of a Souare service ace, while Colon finished the set off with a kill.
Six service aces punctuated the sweep for Lehman in the third set. Colon widened the Lehman lead to seven, 15-8, on consecutive service aces. After a brief Bears' run, Francisco served nine straight times to push Lehman to the brink of victory, 24-10. A Bears service error capped the match.
Lehman looks to continue their winning ways when they host Purchase College on Tuesday, March 12. First service is set for 7:00 p.m.
