BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College men's volleyball team won its final game of the regular season on Tuesday evening, defeating visiting Medgar Evers College, 3-0, in a CUNY Athletic Conference match. Set scores were 25-8, 25-8, and 25-7.
Lehman will enter the CUNYAC Championships on Tuesday, April 9, as either the sixth or seventh seed, depending on other matches this week. Medgar Evers is locked into the eighth seed, and will face top-seeded Baruch College in the Quarterfinals.
Today, the Lightning (13-15, 3-9 CUNYAC) dominated MEC (0-16, 0-12) throughout the contest. In the first, Lehman led early, 11-2, on a 9-0 run. During that stretch, senior Luis Colon (Bronx, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) had back-to-back service aces.
The second set saw Lehman jump out 5-0, as senior Brian Francisco (Bronx, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) had two of his five service aces on the night. With the score 11-8 in Lehman's favor, the Lightning then went on a 14-0 run to win the game, on the service of Francisco and Ahmad Abugharbieh (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers).
Abugharbieh was the first server for Lehman in the third set, where he recorded two straight aces to set the tone.
For the evening, junior Manuel Bonilla (Bronx, N.Y./Walton) had a team-high eight kills, while first year player Ibrahima Souare (Bronx, N.Y./Social Justice) had six. Colon had a match-high 20 assists, while Francisco led the Lightning with nine digs.
In a pregame ceremony, Lehman College Director of Athletics Dr. Martin L. Zwiren presented tokens of appreciation to the two seniors on the roster, Luis Colon, and Brian Francisco, who played their final match in the Lehman College APEX.
