Men's Volleyball Faces York College in CUNYAC Quarterfinals

BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College men's volleyball team enters the 2013 CUNY Athletic Conference Championships tonight, playing in the Quarterfinal Round at York College, in Queens, N.Y., at 7:30 p.m. Lehman enters as the #6 seed, while the host Cardinals are the #3 seed.

The Lightning enter the post-season with a 13-15 overall record. During the regular season, these two teams met twice, with York winning both times. In late February, in a match played at the APEX, York won 3-1. Three weeks later, in a match played at York, the Cardinals won, 3-0.

As a team, Lehman leads the nation in aces per set, as ranked by the NCAA, with 2.13 per set. Individually, senior Luis Colon (Bronx, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) is fourth in the land in aces per set with .59. Classmate Brian Francisco (Bronx, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) is sixth at .57, and junior Manuel Bonilla (Bronx, N.Y./Walton) is tenth at .48.

York enters the Championships with an overall record of 22-14, having lost three of its last four matches. Terrence Sutton's 2.71 digs per set not only leads the team, but also lands him eighth in all of Division III. Jon Peter Sardea ranks in the top 45 in Division III in both aces and assists per set. Edner Geffrard and Avinash Thomas are the top offensive threats.

The other Quarterfinals matchups are #1 Baruch vs. #8 Medgar Evers, #2 Hunter vs. #7 John Jay  and #4 Brooklyn vs. #5 CCNY. The higher seed is hosting each matchup.

The Semifinals and Finals of the Championships will be played Friday, April 12, in the Nat Holman Gymnasium, on the campus of The City College of New York. The Championship game will be taped for broadcast at a later date by CUNY TV.
