BRONX, N.Y. - The Lehman College men's basketball team unleashed a balanced attack and cruised by Sarah Lawrence College, 94-49, on Wednesday evening in the APEX. Every player who suited up for the Lightning scored points to help secure the victory. This was Lehman's final non-conference game of the season.
The Lightning trailed early, but senior guard Stanley Stephens (New York, N.Y./Manhattan Center) had back to-back dunks to help the Lightning (11-8, 5-5 CUNYAC) begin a 10-2 run in a span of 3:30 to put Lehman up for good. The Gryphons (7-11, 2-0 HVIAC) never got the game close again as the Lightning cruised for the rest of the half.
Senior center Yve Jay Modi (Ramat Gan, Israel/Clarkstown South) capped off Lehman's huge half by scoring the last two points to put the home team up, 46-21, heading into halftime.
In the second half, the Lightning would use their depth as a weapon. Junior guard Marty Arzu (Bronx, N.Y./Fannie Lou Hamer) took a pass from junior forward Kevan Proctor (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grand Street Campus) and laid the ball up an in to give Lehman a 62-27 lead, with 12:54 left to play. With 11:38 left in regulation, sophomore guard Edwin Diaz (City Island, N.Y./Westside) sprinted down the court with the ball and drove it up and in for Lehman's 63rd and 64th points of the contest.
Senior guard Sean Desimone (Corona, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) got involved in Lehman's offensive attack by nailing a three-point shot to extend the home team's lead to 41 points. Freshman forward Astrit Krasniqi (New York, N.Y. /St. Agnes Boys) later took a feed from senior guard Ryan Alvarado (New York, N.Y./Urban Peace) and laid the ball up and in to make it 72-36, Lehman. Alvarado scored a two-point bucket of his own, via a layup, with 6:21 left to play. Senior guard Danny Rock (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) joined the scoring parade, by attacking the rim for two points.
Junior guard Vince Carter (Bronx, N.Y./Satellite Academy) would cap off Lehman's offensive explosion by hitting a shot from beyond the arc to officially join the scoring party.
Alvarado, Diaz, and junior guard Jonathan Greenfield (Hartford, Conn./Windsor) each scored 13 points, to lead the Lightning. Sophomore forward Jerrome Jones (Bronx, N.Y./Mount Vernon) added 11 points of his own. Senior guard Kelvin Gil (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) scored nine points, grabbed seven boards, and forced a steal. Modi led all players with 10 rebounds.
The Lightning will hit the road and be back in CUNY Athletic Conference action on Saturday, February 1st, against Brooklyn College. The game is scheduled to begin at 2:45 p.m.
