BRONX, N.Y. - The Lehman College men's volleyball team once again came from behind, topping Purchase College, 3-1, on Thursday evening in the APEX. Set scores were 22-25, 25-20, 29-27, and 25-21. The Lightning have now won the first two games of the 2014 season.
For the second straight game, Lehman got off to a slow start as the Panthers (0-2) claimed the first set. The situation seemed grim for the Lightning as they fell behind, 19-16, in the second game. After calling a timeout, the Lightning would respond by scoring nine of the last ten points to win the set, evening the match at one game apiece.
The Panthers had four different set-point opportunities that would give them the critical victory, but the home team would foil the opposition's plans each time. After the Lightning evened the game at 27, they knocked in the final two points, the last one thanks to a service ace from sophomore outside hitter Jaleel Lino (Bronx, N.Y./Toledo CC), to win the set and go up 2-1 in the match.
In the fourth set, Purchase was on the brink, but showed desperation by scoring the first three points. The Panthers were able to extend their lead to 11-5, but Lehman would rally with a 10– 2 run to take the lead, 15-13. The Lightning had game point and wasted little time as sophomore setter Roberto Perez (Bronx, N.Y./Bronx Leadership Academy) set the ball to Lino who tallied the kill to clinch the match for Lehman.
Lino led the Lightning with 29 kills and registered four service aces. Perez had 29 assists. Junior outside hitter Miguel Gallardo (Bronx, N.Y./Salesian) led all players with 5 service aces.
The Lightning will travel for the first time this season on Tuesday, February 4, for a non-conference clash with Sarah Lawrence College. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
