Men's Basketball Storms Back to Knock Off Medgar Evers

Box Score

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Lehman College men's basketball team rallied from a 10-point deficit in the second half to knock off Medgar Evers, 81-79, in CUNY Athletic Conference action on Friday evening. Lehman is now 2-0 in conference play and 5-2 overall.

The Lightning trailed 79-78 in the closing seconds of the game, but a three-point shot from junior forward Chaun Miller (Brooklyn, N.Y./Eleanor Roosevelt) gave Lehman the lead, 81-79, with eight seconds remaining. The Cougars (1-5, 0-2 CUNYAC) launched off a desperation three-point shot that bounced off the front rim and into the arms of senior guard Jonathan Greenfield (Hartford, Conn./Windsor) to clinch the victory for the Lightning.

"We showed a lot of mental toughness battling back in the second half in a very difficult environment, and lots of foul trouble," Lightning head coach, Steve Schulman said.

The Lightning entered the second half trailing by ten, but would rally quickly as junior forward Jerrome Jones (Bronx, N.Y./Mount Vernon) and sophomore forward Driton Hasangjekaj (Bronx, N.Y./DeWitt Clinton) tallied back-to-back three pointers in a span of 1:14, to shrink the Cougars' lead to 51-47. After freshman guard John Brens' (Washington Heights, N.Y./All Hallows) layup pulled Lehman to within one, Medgar Evers would go on an 11-2 run to go back up by double digits, 66-56, with 11:52 remaining.

Lehman would counter by scoring the game's next ten points, capped off by a layup from Greenfield to tie the game at 66, with 9:19 remaining. Later in the second stanza, Miller forced a steal, dribbled down the court, and laid the ball up and into the hoop in back-to-back possessions to help Lehman jump out to a 72-68 lead, with 6:34 left to play.  Both teams battled back and forth for the remainder of the game until Miller's heroics in the final minute helped lift the Lightning to their second conference victory in as many games.

Miller and Brens each had 18 points to lead Lehman. Miller had a team-high eight rebounds, tallied four assists, and picked up four steals, while Brens dished out a team-high five assists and forced two steals of his own. Jones scored 12 points, had four assists, and recorded four steals. Greenfield tallied 11 points and had four steals, while Hasangjekaj scored 10 points.

Lehman will have another CUNYAC road game on Tuesday, against York, at 8:00 p.m.
