Box Score
BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Lehman College men's basketball team had an early lead, but could not hold on at Brooklyn College on Saturday afternoon, falling 81-72. The teams have now split the season series with the Bulldogs, with each team winning on its own home court.
The Lightning led by as many as four points midway through the first half, but the Bulldogs would respond by going on an 8-0 run in less than a minute to go up, 34-25, with 5:51 remaining in the opening half.
In the second half, the Lightning would rally as senior guard Kelvin Gil (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) nailed a shot from beyond the arc to pull Lehman to within three points, with 7:00 remaining. However, it did not take the Bulldogs long to regain control of the game as the home team scored eight of the next 10 points to extend their lead to nine, with just 4:49 remaining in regulation. The Lightning never got close again as Brooklyn would hang on for the conference victory.
Gil led the Lightning in scoring with 23 points, and also grabbed nine boards while forcing two steals. Senior guard Stanley Stephens (New York, N.Y./Manhattan Center) added 22 points. Junior forward Jerrome Jones (Bronx, N.Y./Mount Vernon) scored 12 points and had nine rebounds, while junior forward Kevan Proctor (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grand Street Campus) had eight rebounds of his own.
In the updated CUNYAC standings, the Lightning are in 5th place, a half game behind John Jay for fourth place.
The Lightning will return home on Monday, February 3, as Lehman will host first place Staten Island. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
