QUEENS, N.Y. – The Lehman College men's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision at York College on Tuesday night, in CUNY Athletic Conference action. Set scores were 25-22, 25-17, 22-25, 25-16. Lehman is now 8-13 overall, and 3-7 in conference play, while York is 15-12, and 7-2 in the conference.
The host Cardinals took the first two sets, which were very close, before the Lightning broke through to win the third. York would win set number four to close out the victory.
In the opener, Lehman had built a 22-21 lead on a kill by sophomore Jaleel Lino (Bronx, N.Y./Toledo C.C.), but York would win the final four points to claim the set. In the second set, the score was tied at eight all, when sophomore Edmond Badu (Kumasi, Ghana/Marble Hill) recorded a kill, on a set assist from sophomore Roberto Perez (Bronx, N.Y./Bronx Leadership). But an 8-2 run pushed York out in front, where they remained, winning the set.
In the third, Lino had back-to-back kills to lift Lehman to a 14-10 lead, midway through. Shortly thereafter, junior Miguel Gallardo (Bronx, N.Y./Salesian) had one of his 18 kills to put Lehman up big, 18-12. York would close to within three, at 23-20, but another Gallardo kill propelled Lehman to victory.
Heading to the fourth set, Lehman led 9-8, on a kill by freshman John Mercado (Bronx, N.Y./Central Park East). The set stayed close, with the lead flipping back and forth. York led 16-14 after another Gallardo kill, before the hosts went on a 5-0 run to put distance between the two schools. Lehman could not recover, the York won the match.
On the night, Lino led all players with 22 kills, while adding six digs and two block assists. Gallardo added 18 kills and 10 digs, while Perez had 39 assists and seven digs. Badu led Lehman with 11 digs.
Lehman will next travel to face CUNYAC power Hunter College on Thursday, March 20, for a 6:00 p.m. start.
