Box Score QUEENS, N.Y. – The Lehman College men's volleyball team saw its season come to an end on Tuesday night, with a straight set lost at #3 York College in the Quarterfinal Round of the CUNY Athletic Conference Championships. Set scores were 25-21, 25-23, 25-19.
In the first set, both teams trades points, with a kill by sophomore Jaleel Lino (Bronx, N.Y./Toledo C.C.) bringing the score to 21-20 for York. Back-to-back points for York forced a Lehman timeout, but the Cardinals responded with two more points before senior Ahmad Abugharbieh (Amman, Jordan/Ittihad) had a kill. But York scored the final two points to take the first set, 25-20. Lino had a total of six kills in that first set, while sophomore Roberto Perez (Bronx, N.Y./Bronx Leadership) had four digs.
The second set saw a similar scenario, where the two teams relentlessly attacked each other. York opened a 19-12 lead, before a 7-1 Lehman run put the Lightning back in the game. Lino and sophomore Ramon Jimenez (New York, N.Y./George Washington) each had big kills during that stretch. But the Lightning continued to fight, eventually knotting the score at 22, on a kill by senior Miguel Gallardo (Bronx, N.Y./Salesian). From there, however, York gained its composure, and took a 24-22 lead. Another Gallardo kill then pulled Lehman to within 24-23. Then York, who never trailed in the set, closed it out, sending the match to the third set.
Both teams continued back-and-forth play as the third set started, but this time Lehman held the upper hand early. A kill by Perez put Lehman up 8-5 early on, before York used a 6-1 run to retake the lead. Lehman kept it close, as a Gallardo kill made the score 16-14, in favor of the host Cardinals. But the more experienced York squad took control of the match at that point, extending that lead to 22-15, en route to the 25-19 win.
For the night, Lino hit .367, with a match-high 16 kills, while Perez had 20 set assists and Gallardo had six kills, five digs, and four service aces.
Lehman now ends the 2014 season with a 9-18 record.
