Lightning Preps for Coaches vs Cancer

All Division III basketball fans will certainly have their eyes on Lehman College as the Lightning men and women prepare to host the host the 9th Annual CUNY Athletic Conference Coaches versus Cancer Tournament on December 29th and 30th at the APEX Main Gymnasium.

This year's field is amongst the best ever assembled.  On the women's side of the tournament, two former D III National Champions are set to meet in one semi-final on Tuesday afternoon.  While on the men's side, three of the four teams enter the tournament atop their respective league.  Lehman is leading the CUNYAC at 8-2 overall and 4-0 in conference play.  Western Connecticut sits at 6-3 and 2-0 in the Little East.  Jersey City is a perfect 5-0 in NJAC play and 7-2 overall while Buffalo State is 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the SUNYAC.  The four teams in the men's tournament come to the Bronx with a combined 26-9.

The Lightning women will kick off the event, as they host the College of Saint Elizabeth on Tuesday at 12:00 p.m., which will be followed by the other first-round matchup of Fairleigh Dickinson University against the College of New Jersey at 2:00 pm. Then the men's tournament will begin, with New Jersey City University playing Buffalo State College at 4:00 p.m. Lehman will play Western Connecticut State at 6:00 p.m.

Wednesday will bring the consolation games at 12:00 p.m. for the women and 4:00 p.m. for the men, with the championship games tipping-off at 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., respectively.

Coach Eric Harrison's women are 6-4 and in the hunt for a conference championship this season.

"We are very excited to once again host a great basketball event for such a worthy cause", said tournament founder Eric Harrison. "With such a great caliber of teams on both the men's and the women's side, this will truly be a tournament to remember."

The Lehman men enter the tournament with an 8-2 record, their best start since the 2003-2004 season. The Lightning are currently in first place in the CUNYAC.

"We believe we have one of the strongest fields in the history of the Coaches vs Cancer tournament at Lehman.  It should be a great learning experience for everyone involved."

All eight games will be streamed on the Lehman Athletics' All-Access streaming network. http://lehmanathletics.com/watch/

The Tournament benefits the Coaches vs. Cancer program, a collaborative initiative of the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), which leverages the personal experiences, community leadership, and professional excellence of basketball coaches nationwide to increase cancer awareness and promote healthy living through year-round awareness efforts, fundraising activities, and advocacy programs. This program provides critical mission outreach, while raising funds in support of the American Cancer Society's lifesaving efforts to help people stay well and get well, find cures, and fight back through legislative action at the local, state, and national levels. Since 1993, high school and college coaches across the country have raised nearly $87 million to support the Society's fight against cancer.
