Men's Volleyball Cruises Past CSI in CUNYAC Home Opener

Box Score

BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College men's volleyball team earned a CUNY Athletic Conference victory, by defeating the College of Staten Island in straight sets, in the APEX Main Gym on Wednesday evening. Set scores were 25-10, 25-20, and 25-13. The Lightning have now won three matches in a row.

Lehman (4-2, 2-1 CUNYAC) dominated the first set to go up 1-0. In the second, the Dolphins (2-3, 1-2 CUNYAC) turned momentum into their favor by scoring the first four points. The Lightning got on the board in the second stanza, thanks to a kill from senior opposite hitter Miguel Gallardo (Bronx, N.Y./Salesian). With Lehman trailing 12-11, senior middle blocker Ahmad Abugharbieh (Amman, Jordan/Ittihad) slammed home a kill to tie the set at 12. Gallardo tallied another kill to give the Lightning a lead they would not surrender for the remainder of the set, 14-13. The Lightning went on to win, 25-20, to put CSI on the brink.

The Lightning trailed early in the third set, 5-3, but a kill from junior outside hitter Jaleel Lino (Punta Gorda, Belize/Toledo Community College) and back-to-back service aces from Gallardo gave the home team a 6-5 lead. The Lightning would not trail again for the remainder of the match. At the end, Lino set up freshman opposite hitter Carlos Segura (Bronx, N.Y./Marble Hill), who slammed home a kill to clinch Lehman's second conference victory of the season.

Gallardo led the way for the Lightning, both on offense and defense, by producing 13 kills, 11 digs, and three service aces, which were all game-highs. Lino had eleven kills, while freshman setter Emmanuel Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./Alfred E. Smith) produced 35 assists and eight digs. Abugharbieh and junior middle blocker Ramon Jimenez (New York, N.Y./George Washington) each recorded four kills, while freshman opposite hitter Roberto Ventura Diaz (New York, N.Y./Cardenal Sancha) had two service aces.

The Lightning will return to the APEX Main Gym on Saturday, for a non-conference match against Mount Ida, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
