Box Score PURCHASE, N.Y.- The Lehman College men's volleyball team earned a hard-fought non-conference victory against Purchase College, in five sets, on Tuesday evening. Set scores were 25-22, 25-18, 23-25, 23-25, 15-7.
The Lightning (3-2) earned victories in the first two sets to put Purchase on the brink, but the Panthers (2-5) rallied to win the next two to force the rubber set. The Lightning were able to pull away in the fifth set to hold off Purchase's rally and clinch the match.
Junior outside hitter Jaleel Lino (Punta Gorda, Belize/Toledo Community College) led the way, both on offense and defense, with 15 kills, 12 digs, four block assists, and two service aces. Senior opposite hitter Miguel Gallardo (Bronx, N.Y./Salesian) slammed home 11 kills, had just as many digs, and produced three service aces.
Freshman opposite hitter Roberto Ventura Diaz (New York, N.Y./Cardenal Sancha) executed 10 kills with 11 digs, while classmate Jose Bautista (Bronx, N.Y./H.S. of World Cultures) had 11 digs of his own. Freshman setter Emmanuel Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./Alfred E. Smith) had 41 assists and five digs. Senior middle blocker Ahmad Abugharbieh (Amman, Jordan/Ittihad) had five kills, three block assists, and two solo blocks. Junior middle blocker Ramon Jimenez (New York, N.Y./George Washington) added four kills and five block assists.
The Lightning will return to the APEX Gym on Wednesday, for a CUNY Athletic Conference match with the College of Staten Island, at 7:00 p.m.
