Box Score BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College men's volleyball team cruised to a straight set victory over Sarah Lawrence College, on Saturday afternoon, in the APEX Auxiliary Gym. Set scores were 25-3, 25-13, and 25-8. The Lightning have now won eight of their last 10 matches.
In the first set, Lehman (9-4) dominated from wire-to-wire, and scored 11 service aces as a team. Freshman Carlos Segura (Bronx, N.Y./Marble Hill) scored five of them, while classmate Emmanuel Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./Alfred E. Smith) produced four. Freshman Roberto Ventura Diaz (New York, N.Y./Cardenal Sancha) scored the final two points of the set, via aces, to give Lehman a 1-0 lead in the match.
The second set was tighter in the early going. Segura produced his sixth ace of the match to give Lehman a 5-3 lead. After Sarah Lawrence (0-2) pulled to within 10-8, senior Ahmad Abugharbieh (Amman, Jordan/Ittihad) slammed home a kill to put the home team back up by three. With the score 15-13 in favor of Lehman, the Lightning took control by scoring the stanza's last ten points, highlighted by three more service aces from Diaz. This gave Lehman a 2-0 lead in the match, putting Sarah Lawrence on the brink.
The Lightning once again scored points off the serve in the third set. Ortiz's ninth ace of the contest gave Lehman a commanding 12-2 lead. Junior Roberto Perez (Bronx, N.Y./Bronx Leadership Academy) added four service aces in the frame, including his final one that clinched the set, and the match for the Lightning.
For the afternoon, Lehman produced 24 service aces as a team. Ortiz tallied nine, Segura recorded six, Diaz scored five, and Perez added four. Abugharbieh produced a match-high seven kills, while Segura slammed home five.
The Lightning will be back in action on Wednesday, when they travel to John Jay College to battle the Bloodhounds, in a key CUNY Athletic Conference contest. First serve is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
