Box Score BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College men's volleyball team evened its record at 1-1 on the young season by beating Yeshiva University, 3-0, in the home opener on Thursday night. Set scores were 25-12, 25-18, and 25-21.
The Lightning were led by junior Jaleel Lino (Punta Gorda, Belize/Toledo C.C.), who led all players with 16 kills while hitting .500. He added five service aces and as many digs.
In the first set, Lehman jumped out to a 9-4 lead on consecutive kills from freshman Roberto Ventura Diaz (New York, N.Y./Cardenal Sancha). The Lightning ended the set on an 8-1 run to claim the opener.
In the second set, Lehman led 10-3 on a kill by senior Ahmad Abugharbieh (Amman, Jordan/Ittihad). But the Maccabees (1-1) rallied to knot the score at 11 apiece. The score remained close until a Lino kill put Lehman up, 19-15. After a Yeshiva error, Lino served up a service ace, and Lehman led 21-15, before winning the set, 25-18.
In the third set, Lino registered three straight kills for Lehman, as the Lightning led 10-1, then 13-2. Yeshiva would rally, getting as close as 23-20, before Abugharbieh and senior Miguel Gallardo (Bronx, N.Y./Salesian) had back-to-back kills to seal the win.
Lehman used a balanced attack in support of Lino. Abugharbieh finished with seven kills, while Valencia Diaz, Gallardo, and junior Ramon Jimenez (New York, N.Y./George Washington) each added five. Freshman Emmanuel Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./Alfred E. Smith) led all players with 18 assists, while Gallardo added 12. Gallardo paced Lehman with nine digs.
Up next for Lehman is the CUNY Athletic Conference Multi-Match, hosted by John Jay College, on Saturday. The Lightning will face York College at 9:00 a.m., then Brooklyn College at 11:00 a.m.
