Box Score BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College men's volleyball team dropped its CUNY Athletic Conference match to Hunter College, in straight sets, on Thursday evening in the APEX Main Gym. Set scores were 25-14, 25-14, and 25-22. The Lightning drop to 4-7 in CUNYAC matches, while the Hawks remain undefeated (10-0) in conference play.
Senior Miguel Gallardo (Bronx, N.Y./Salesian) had a solid game with seven kills, one service ace, and scored a total of 9.5 points. He added five assists, and helped anchor the defense with seven digs, a solo block, and one block assist. Junior Jaleel Lino (Punta Gorda, Belize/Toledo Community College) had a team-high nine kills. Freshman Carlos Segura (Bronx, N.Y./Marble Hill) slammed home four kills and produced five digs. Junior Ramon Jimenez (New York, N.Y./George Washington) added three kills, while freshman Henry Nunez (Bronx, N.Y./Walton) recorded seven digs.
After dropping the first two sets, the Lightning and Hawks engaged in a tight battle in the third. Gallardo produced back-to-back points for the Lightning, via a kill and a service ace, to pull the home team to within three, at 17-14. Senior Ahmad Abugharbieh (Amman, Jordan/Ittihad) produced a service ace of his own, to narrow Hunter's lead to 21-17. Freshman Emmanuel Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./Alfred E. Smith) scored an ace to pull Lehman to within 22-19. The Hawks had set-point, but Gallardo kept Lehman alive by slamming home a kill, to cut the deficit to three. An attack error from Hunter made it 24-22. However, the Hawks were able to score on the next play to clinch the set and the match.
The Lightning will be back in action for a pair of matches on Tuesday. Lehman will host the City College of New York, in a CUNYAC match at 5:00 p.m., followed by a non-conference contest against New Jersey City University, scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
