Box Score BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College men's volleyball team earned a thrilling come-from-behind five-set victory over the College of Mount Saint Vincent, in the APEX Main Gym, on Friday evening. Set scores were 31-29, 25-27, 20-25, 25-23, and 15-10.
The Lightning were led by junior
Jaleel Lino (Punta Gorda, Belize/Toledo Community College), who dominated both offensively and defensively, with 24 kills and 21 digs. He added two service aces, three total blocks, and produced a match-high 28.5 points. Senior
Miguel Gallardo (Bronx, N.Y./Salesian) tallied a triple-double, with 14 kills, 13 digs, and 19 assists.
In the opening set, a kill from Gallardo gave Lehman a 24-21 lead. The Dolphins (12-8) scored three unanswered points to tie the set. Lino slammed home a kill to end Mount Saint Vincent's run and gave Lehman another set point opportunity, at 25-24. Each team traded points back and forth, until the Dolphins broke the pattern and scored two points in a row, to go up 29-28, earning their first set point opportunity of the match. This time it was the visiting team that couldn't cash in, as Lehman tied the stanza at 29. On the next rally, Gallardo produced a kill to put Lehman back up by one. Emmanuel Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./Alfred E. Smith), giving Lehman the first set by a score of 31-29.
In the second set, Lehman was put on the brink, trailing 24-23. Lino kept the set alive by slamming home a kill, to tie it up at 24. Lehman had a set point opportunity, leading 25-24, but the Dolphins scored the last three points to win the stanza, 27-25, knotting the match at one set apiece.
Mount Saint Vincent won the third set, 25-20, to put Lehman on the cusp of defeat. In the fourth frame, the Lightning were hanging on to a 24-23 lead. Gallardo took a feed from Ortiz and slammed the ball down for a kill, to force the fifth and deciding set.
In the fifth and final stanza, Abugharbieh opened the scoring by producing a kill, to put Lehman up 1-0. From that point on, each team traded points. With Lehman up 5-4, junior
Roberto Perez broke that trend by scoring a service ace that extended Lehman's advantage to 6-4. The Dolphins were able to rally and tie the set at nine. From there, momentum quickly turned back in Lehman's favor, as Gallardo produced a kill, followed by back-to-back kills from Lino, to give the home team a 12-9 lead. Carlos Segura (Bronx, N.Y./Marble Hill) slammed home a kill to clinch the comeback win for Lehman.
Segura helped anchor the defense with 12 digs. Freshman
Henry Nunez (Bronx, N.Y./Walton) recorded nine digs of his own, while Abugharbieh and Ortiz each produced eight. Junior
Ramon Jimenez (New York, N.Y./George Washington) added six kills and two block assists.
The Lightning will conclude their six-match homestand on Tuesday evening, against Medgar Evers, at 6:00 p.m.
