Box Score BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College men's volleyball team fell to York College, 3-1, in CUNY Athletic Conference action, in the APEX Main Gym on Tuesday evening. Set scores were 19-25, 25-17, 25-11, and 25-17.
It was Senior Night and Lehman College honored Ahmad Abugharbieh (Amman, Jordan/Ittihad) and Miguel Gallardo (Bronx, N.Y./Salesian), who competed in the final home match of their collegiate careers.
For the match, the Lightning were led by junior Jaleel Lino (Punta Gorda, Belize/Toledo Community College), who tallied 16 kills, produced six digs, and scored two service aces. Gallardo tallied a double-double with 10 kills, 12 digs, and added two aces of his own. Freshman Henry Nunez (Bronx, N.Y./Walton) helped anchor the defense with 10 digs.
The Lightning (15-10, 8-8 CUNYAC) started off strong by winning the first set, 25-19. During that set, with Lehman up 9-7, Abugharbieh slammed home a kill to put the Lightning up by three. Later in the set, with the Lightning at set-point, junior Ramon Jimenez (New York, N.Y./George Washington) tallied a kill to clinch the first stanza for Lehman.
In the second set, York (14-16, 12-4 CUNYAC) had a commanding 22-13 lead. Gallardo slammed home a kill, followed by back-to-back kills from Lino, to pull Lehman within six, at 22-16. However, the Cardinals would pull away and even the match at one set apiece.
The Lightning dropped the third set, 25-11, putting them on the brink. In the fourth set, Lehman trailed 15-5 but would respond by scoring nine of the next 14 points, highlighted by two kills from Lino and one from Jimenez, to shrink York's lead to 20-14. The Cardinals would eventually pull away again to win the set, 25-17, and clinch the match.
The Lightning will travel to Massachusetts this weekend for the MIT scramble. The Lightning will battle the host Engineers on Friday at 6:00 p.m. On Saturday, Lehman will battle Endicott at 10:30 a.m., then Bard at 1:00 p.m.
