Men's Volleyball Concludes 2015 Season With Loss to Baruch in CUNYAC Semifinals

Box Score NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Lehman College men's volleyball team had its 2015 season come to an end, as the #5 Lightning fell to #1 Baruch, 3-0, in the CUNY Athletic Conference Semifinals, on Friday evening at Hunter College. Set scores were 25-8, 25-17, and 25-16.

Senior Miguel Gallardo (Bronx, N.Y./Salesian) led the way for the Lightning with 10 kills and eight digs. Junior Jaleel Lino (Punta Gorda, Belize/Toledo Community College) added eight kills, while senior Ahmad Abugharbieh (Amman, Jordan/Ittihad) slammed home four kills of his own. Freshman Emmanuel Ortiz (Bronx, N.Y./Alfred E. Smith) recorded 22 assists, while classmate Henry Nunez (Bronx, N.Y./Walton) helped anchor the defense with seven digs.

After the dropping the first set, the Lightning and Bearcats were engaged in a tight battle early in the second. Gallardo produced two early kills, with the latter one pulling Lehman to within one, at 7-6. After the Bearcats gave themselves more breathing room, Gallardo tallied another kill to shrink Baruch's lead to 15-10. Later in the set, the Lightning scored two unanswered points, highlighted by a kill from Lino, to cut Baruch's advantage to 24-17. The Bearcats were able to score the 25^th point to go up 2-0 in the match.

In the third set, Lino and freshman Carlos Segura (Bronx, N.Y./Marble Hill) tallied back-to-back kills to give Lehman a 5-4 lead. The Bearcats were able pull ahead and take control of the stanza. With Baruch having a set-point opportunity, Gallardo kept Lehman alive by tallying a kill to cut Baruch's lead to 24-16. The Bearcats scored on the next rally to clinch the set and the match.

Baruch went on to defeat Hunter, 3-1, to capture its seventh consecutive CUNYAC championship.

Lehman finished the season 16-14. It was a successful season as the Lightning advanced to the CUNYAC Semifinals for the first time since 2011.
