Minott’s Lay-Up in Closing Seconds Gives the Lightning Victory over Medgar Evers

Box Score Brooklyn, NY - An Olando Minott lay-up with two seconds on the clock snapped a 77-77 to give the Lightning a two point conference victory.  The Medgar Evers Cougars (7-12:4-6) shot at the buzzer was blocked by John Brens.  It was only his second block of the season.

Minott led Lehman (13-5:8-2) with 19 points and 10 rebounds.  Olusegun Williams also was credited with a double double scoring 17 points while grabbing 10 rebounds; both career highs.  Brens and Andrew Utate added 15 and 14 points respectively.

The Lightning owned an 11 point advantage in the first half thanks in part to three three-point field goals by guard Paris Underwood.  The nine points equaled Underwood's season high.  However the Cougars were able to rally and eventually take a 37-36 lead in the closing minute of the first half but Minott drained another lay-up in the closing seconds of the half to give the Lightning a 38-37 lead at the break.

In the second half it was the Cougars turn to surge ahead.  The Cougars built up a 14 point lead (58-44) six minutes into the half.  Midway through the half Minott hit four consecutive free throws to cut the lead to five (60-55).  The Lightning had to wait another five and half minutes until Utate drained a three-pointer to give the Lightning a lead 70-69 lead.  The game went back and forth the final four and minutes until Minott hit the lay-up in the closing seconds.

Matthew Lee, the Cougars leading scorer and CUNYAC leader tallied 24 points and 11 rebounds.

The Lightning step out of league play Monday night and host Rutgers-Camden at 7:00 PM in the APEX.  Rutgers-Camden scheduled game for Saturday at William Paterson has been postponed.
