Men’s Basketball rallies to shock CCNY, 85-80

BRONX, NY --- The Lehman College men's basketball team rallied from to win against the visitors from the City College of New York, 85-80, on Saturday afternoon in a critical CUNYAC matchup.
 
The Lightning of Lehman (15-6 / 9-3 CUNYAC) used a balance scoring attack, with five players finishing in double-digits. John Brens led the way with 21 points, five rebounds and five assists with two steals, playing all 40 minutes of the game. Olando Minott scored 19 while dishing out six assists. Andrew Utate exploded off the bench for 18 points with four assists, shooting five of five from the floor and three-for-three from behind the arc. Chaun Miller contributed 15 points, while Olesegun Williams added ten points and a team-high six rebounds. As a team, Lehman shot 50.9 percent from the floor.
 
The Beavers of CCNY (11-8 / 6-5 CUNYAC) were led by Che McCoy, who shot six of eight from downtown to finish with 21 points. Mark Richards contributed 15 points with five rebounds, while Khalil Hamer finished with a game-high ten assists to go along with 13 points and seven boards. The Beavers shot 53.8 percent from behind the three-point arc.
 
Down by nine with 3:07 remaining in the game, the Lightning appeared headed for their second straight CUNYAC loss. Back to back three-pointers from Utate pulled Lehman to within three, then a free throw from Brens and a jumper from Miller tied the game at 80-80 for the first time since 17:39 in the second half. Then with 28 seconds remaining, Miller drove for a layup to put Lehman in front. Three free throws down the stretch, including two from Utate, iced it for the Lightning. All in all, Lehman scored the last 14 points of the game.
 
With the victory, Lehman is tied for first in the CUNYAC standings with four conference games left to go.
 
Prior to the game, the Lightning celebrated Homecoming with an Alumni game celebrating former student-athletes from years past.
 
The Lightning will host Baruch College on Friday, February 5th as part of "White Out" night. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
