Bronx, N.Y. -- The Lehman College bounced back after a sluggish first half, and responded with a strong offensive performance in the second to top Brooklyn College, 91-81, Friday night in CUNYAC play at the APEX Center.
The Lightning (9-8, 6-4 CUNYAC) have now won three of the last four games, and have sole possession of fourth in the conference.
Andrew Utate led four players with 22 points, including four three-pointers, while
Vince Young came off the bench with a career-high 21 points while adding seven rebounds.
Mylo Mitchell added 19 points and six boards and
Jean Marcial chipped in with 10 points and 6 rebounds in the victory.
Luis Hernandez also dished off a game-high six assists, while
Damian Bellamy secured a team-best 10 rebounds with eight points.
Leading the way for the Bulldogs (3-16, 1-9 CUNYAC) was Enees Nikovic, who compiled a double-double with 23 points and 16 rebounds. Chis McIllhatton connected on five threes for 15 points, while Niv Konfino and Maynard Grant IV scored 12 points each in a losing effort.
In the first half, Lehman struggled with their shot as they fell behind early. The team shot just 15-of-47 (31.9%) from the field and the Bulldogs drilled 10 of their 11 free throws in the half, but forcing 10 Brooklyn turnovers kept the game close as they led 41-37.
The second half saw a much sharper team on both ends of the floor for the Lightning. They hit 52.8% (19-for-36) of their shots in the half, and the overall team defense forced 13 of Brooklyn's 23 total turnovers. Seven different Lehman players notched steals, including five (
John Brens, Utate, Bellamy, Marcial,
Astrit Krasniqi) with two or more in the game as the team pulled away for the win.
Up next for the Lightning is a non-conference matchup with St. Joseph's (L.I.) at home. Tip time is set for 7:00 p.m. at the APEX Center. Live stats and streaming video will be made available at LehmanAthletics.com.
