Bronx, N.Y. – The Lehman College men's basketball team distributed the ball very well which led to a high shooting percentage as they defeated St. Joseph's (L.I.), 86-71, in nonconference action Monday night at the APEX Center.
With the win, the Lightning move to 10-8 on the season and the Golden Eagles drop to 5-12.
Vince Young led five Lightning players in double figures with 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting.
Andrew Utate tallied 13 points with four assists and seven rebounds, while
Mylo Mitchell (five assists) and
Damian Bellamy added 12 points each in the win. They also got 10 points off the bench from
Juan Carlos Guzman Nieves as well as game-high six assists from
John Brens.
St. Joseph's was paced by Frank Basile, who notched a double-double in the losing effort with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Andy Laurent (12) and Fernando Vazquez (13) also chipped in with double-figure points.
After a short 4-0 deficit, Lehman would never trail after 15:58 in the first half. The squad got off to a hot shooting performance in the first half, connecting on 57.7% of their shots as they took a 42-30 lead into halftime.
They would continue their torrid pace in the second, hitting 54.9% (28-for-51) for the game including 10-of-18 from three-point range in the victory. The Lightning played an unselfish brand of basketball, dishing out 18 assists on the 28 total field goals in the game. They also got production from more than just their starting lineup, scoring 36 bench points.
A busy stretch of games continue for the Lightning Wednesday, when they host CUNYAC foe York (N.Y.) as part of a doubleheader with the women's team. Tip time is set for 5:00 p.m. at the APEX Center. Live stats and streaming video will be available on LehmanAthletics.com.
