Lightning Hoop Teams Face Tough Tests

The Lehman College men's and women's basketball teams face tough opponents as they both compete in tip-off tournaments.  The men will travel north to Westfield, MA to participate in the Rick Martin/Holiday Inn Express Tournament.  On Friday the Lightning will battle the host Westfield State and then either Bowdin or St. Lawrence on Saturday.  The women travel down to Fredericksburg, VA to participate in the Hyatt Place Tip-Off Tournament hosted by the University of Mary Washington on Friday and Saturday.  The women will battle Gettysburg on Friday night and either host Mary Washington or Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday.

This will be the opening game of the season for the men.  Lehman looks to eight seniors to anchor this years' squad.  Returning captain Andrew Utate averaged 13.4 points and 4.7 per game last year. Three others averaged double figures a year ago including Luis Hernandez (11.4 ppg), Mylo Mitchell (10.8 ppg) and Jean Marcial (10.7).  John Brens chipped in 7.9 points per game and led the Lightning in assists with 107.

Gabe Lorenzo sat down with Coach Schulman earlier this week.  Here what they discussed.

Westfield State opened the season this past Wednesday night with an 88-69 road victory at Lesley.  Junior forward Marcus Collins paced the Owls with 20 points and six rebounds.

The Lightning will battle perennial power Gettysburg in the opener at 5:00 PM on Friday.  It will be Gettysburg first action of the season.  On Saturday the Lightning will face either host Mary Washington or Virginia Wesleyan.

Fans unable to make the trip to Fredericksburg can follow all of the action on line via live stats and live stream.
