Bronx, NY – For the second time this season, the Lightning (10-9) defeated John Jay (8-14). Lehman earned a straight set victory tonight winning 25-16, 26-24 and 25-12 in a non-conference match. Earlier this year the Lightning prevailed 3-1 in a conference affair.
Tonight the Lightning were led by
Roberto Ventura Diaz. The sophomore recorded 12 kills on 36 attacks. Senior
Emmanuel Ortiz was credited with 14 assists and
Jose Bautista with 12 digs.
In the first set with the match tied at four, the Lightning went on a 5-1 run to take control. The Bloodhounds were kept at bay the remainder of the set. In the second set, John Jay was able to jump in front but the Lightning kept battling, finally tying the game at 21. With Lehman trailing 21-19, the Lightning scored the next five points to take a 24-21 advantage. Lehman had a couple of set points but could not convert and John Jay was able to knot the game at 24 before the Lightning registered the next two points to take a commanding 2-0 lead. The third set was all Lehman. The Lightning jumped out to a 9-1 lead and never looked back. Lehman had all of the momentum in the third set and was never seriously threatened.
Edwin Hernandez led the Bloodhounds with nine kills.
The Lightning will take the week off to prepare for York next week.
