Bronx, N.Y. – The Lehman College men's volleyball team jumped ahead two sets, then had to rally back in the third to defeat York (N.Y.) in CUNYAC play, 3-0 [25-11, 25-14, 25-23], Thursday night at the APEX Center.
The Lightning (11-9, 5-1 CUNYAC) have now won four straight matches, and have clinched a home playoff game.
Roberto Ventura Diaz led the way for the squad with 13 kills in the victory. They also got nine from
Yordy Diaz and eight from
Yaw Eshun (two blocks).
Emmanuel Ortiz slammed a game-high five service aces while also dishing out 18 assists, and
George Montilla collected 17 assists of his own.
Akeem George led the way for the Cardinals (4-19, 1-5 CUNYAC) with six kills and an ace. Burrell Kirk Murray added six kills, while Larry Moore provided four kills and Neko Lytte added five blocks.
Lehman played strong in the first two sets, hitting at .357 and .407% respectively as they cruised to 25-11 and 25-14 victories. In the third, York jumped ahead early and were up 9-3. The Lightning chipped away at the deficit, then used four straight points capped by a Y. Diaz kill to push ahead 19-17.
Both teams went back and forth in the latter portion of the set, and with the game tied at 23 Eshun and Y. Diaz would slam consecutive kills to close out the straight-set win.
The Lightning return to action Saturday morning in a tri-match at the APEX Center. They will face Sarah Lawrence College at 10:00 a.m., then will face the College of Staten Island in a non-CUNYAC matchup at 2:00 p.m. Sarah Lawrence and Staten Island will compete at 12:00 p.m. Live streaming video will be made available at Lehmanathletics.com.
