Box Score Bronx, N.Y. – The Lehman College men's volleyball jumped up one set to start, but would lose three consecutive close sets after that to lose to Sage Colleges, 3-1 [25-23, 17-25, 23-25, 22-25], Saturday afternoon at the APEX Center.
The Lightning (6-8) were led by
Roberto Ventura Diaz, who slammed a team-high 16 kills.
Yordy Diaz added 10 kills along with team-best three service aces and 15 digs, while
Peter Veljovic collected eight kills in a losing effort.
Emmanuel Ortiz dished out 32 assists as the primary setter and added two blocks and five digs.
Ryan Guyton paced the victorious Gators (11-8) with a game-high 21 kills along with two aces and nine digs. Tyler Schnaible added 12 kills, while Bailey Cecchi slammed 11 kills of his own in the win. Cecchi hit three aces to lead the team, while Casey Fitzpatrick led the squad in both assists (48) and digs (12).
Lehman was able to hold on in the first set thanks to late kills by Ventura Diaz and Y. Diaz to move ahead, 1-0. In the second, Sage would battle back in a back-and-forth effort by both teams with seven of the last nine points to even the sets at one.
In the third, both teams grabbed an early advantage in another close set. A
Nam Ho service ace would cut the Lightning deficit to one at 23-22, but Guyton's two kills secured the third.
Lehman would again jump ahead early on in the fourth set, but seven straight Gators points pushed their lead to 12-7. The team would attempt another rally trailing 22-15 with kills from both Y. Diaz and
Yaw Eshun to get within 24-22 but a Chris MacArthur kill closed out the Sage win.
