Lightning Basketball In Action On Friday At Coaches VS. Cancer Tournament

Bronx, N.Y.  – Both of Lehman College basketball teams will be in action this Saturday hosting the 14th edition of Coaches vs. Cancer tournament at The APEX Main Gym when women's and men's sides face off against both squads of St. Joseph's College-LI at 2 pm and 4 pm, respectively.

Admission to the event, on either day, at The APEX is $10, with all proceeds going to off set tournament expenses with the balance of the proceeds donated to the American Cancer Society.

Lehman women (0-8) is aiming win the annual event after reaching the finals four of the last six years.  The last time the Lightning captured the tournament crown was in 2014 with a 68-66 triumph over Adrian College-Mich.  In the way of Lehman this Saturday afternoon are the Golden Eagles of St. Joseph's-LI (3-3) whom fly into The APEX after dropping a 79-77 Skyline Conference match-up to visiting Yeshiva University on December 8th.

The Lightning are coming off a 58-40 loss at home to St. Mary's College-Md in a non-conference encounter on Dec. 7th, as center Nina Gill notched a career-high 21 points for the hosts.

Lehman holds a 9-5 head-to-head record against St. Joseph's-LI since 2002.  The previous meeting between the two squads took place on Dec. 16, 2015 with the Lightning posted their third straight win against the hosts, Golden Eagles, 72-62.  St. Joseph's-LI has not won at The APEX since November 22, 2005 (69-57).

Prior to Lehman-St. Joseph's-LI encounter, the Coaches vs. Cancer women's semifinal tournament bracket commences at noon on Saturday with Drew University (6-2) taking on Clark College (3-7) .  The semifinal winners from Saturday will meet for the championship at The APEX on Sunday at 1 pm, proceeded by the consolation game at 11 am.

Meanwhile, Lehman men's hoopsters (4-5) enter this annual event having reached four of the last five finals.  The last time the Lightning lifted the tournament trophy was in 2014 after defeating Maine Maritime Academy, 80-54.

Lehman comes into the event after posting a 95-88 overtime victory against non-conference rival Sarah Lawrence College at The APEX on Dec. 13th.  Guard Gian Batista scored all of his 33 points in the second half and OT to lead the Lightning, from 23-point deficit, to their third consecutive victory.

Lehman's opponent, St. Joseph's-LI (3-3) is coming off a 96-76 loss at home to conference opponent Yeshiva on Dec. 8th

The Lightning have won five of the last six head-to-head encounters against the Golden Eagles since 2002.  The previous meeting between the two sides took place on January 23, 2017, with Lehman coming out victorious, 86-71, at The APEX.

After the Lightning-Golden Eagles encounter on Saturday, the second men's semifinal will take place at 6 pm with Vassar College (2-5) taking on McDaniel College (4-4).  The tournament concludes on Sunday with the consolation game and championship match set for 3 pm and 5 pm, respectively.
