WOMEN'S TENNIS SILENCES JOHN JAY COLLEGE BLOODHOUNDS WITH AN 8-1 VICTORY

Box Score

The Lehman College women's tennis team clinched a home match in the quarterfinal round of the 2009 CUNYAC Women's Tennis Tournament yesterday as the Lightning defeated the Bloodhounds of John Jay College by a score of 8-1 in Jamaica, NY. With the victory, Lehman improved to a record of 10-6 Overall, including a 5-4 clip in CUNYAC play. John Jay closed out its regular season at 2-14 overall and fell to 2-7 in conference play. The Bloodhounds can still clinch a playoff berth with a City Tech loss to Baruch College or a City Tech defeat to Staten Island.

The Lightning, who won for the sixth time in their last eight tries, dominated doubles play to set the tone for the conference contest. At No. 1 doubles, it was Lehman's dependable duo of Evauna Neville and Aurora Peters defeating John Jay's tandem of Ashley Marrero and Seidron Snipe by a score of 8-4. The Lightning's Melissa Hemick and Gabrela Harewood took care of business at No. 2 doubles, turning back the Bloodhounds' Yan Zheng and Wilesca Belhomme by a score of 8-4, and at No. 3 doubles, it was Adela Ibric and Alexandria Reel of Lehman picking up an 8-3 victory over Jessica Rodriguez and Cynthia Molina of John Jay.

When play switched over to singles, the Lightning continued to apply the pressure to the Bloodhounds and captured five of the six singles sets to account for the 8-1 final score. At No. 1 singles, Neville outlasted Marrero in a classic battle by scores of 4-6, 6-2, and 10-4. Peters downed Snipe at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-3. At No. 3 singles, Harewood silenced Zheng, 6-0, 6-2. Hemick breezed by Belhomme 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. No. 5 singles saw Ibric defeat Molina, 6-1, 6-1. And finally, John Jay picked up their lone victory of the match at No. 6 singles when Rodriguez downed Yasmin Samuels, 6-3, 4-6, 10-8.

Following the match, Head Coach Zack Davis gave his thoughts on his team clinching a quarterfinal round home match.

“We've worked hard all year to establish consistency and put ourselves in a position to snatch a top-four seed in the tournament, and we accomplished that goal through hard work and preparation,” Davis said. “Hopefully we'll ride momentum into the tournament and make some noise.”

The Lightning will continue their regular season tomorrow with a 4:00pm non-conference match at SUNY Farmingdale.
