WOMEN'S TENNIS DEFEATS NEW ROCHELLE, HEADS INTO PLAYOFFS WITH MOMENTUM

Box Score

The Lehman College women's tennis team (11-6 Overall, 5-4 CUNYAC) won for the sixth time in their last seven tries, defeating the Blue Angels of the College of New Rochelle by a score of 9-0 Monday afternoon at the APEX Tennis Courts in the Bronx. The contest served as the season finale for the Lightning, and its clear that Lehman College is playing its best tennis just in time for tomorrow's CUNYAC quarterfinal round contest.

The Lightning dominated play at doubles, capturing all three sets to take an early commanding lead in the match. At No. 1 doubles, Lehman's standout combination of Evauna Neville and Aurora Peters defeated the Blue Angels' pair of Delnisha Baker and Christine Baker by a score of 8-0. The Lightning's Ravnit Bhatia and Natalee Smith defeated New Rochelle's Amanda De Francesco and Sonia Daniel 8-2. Finally, at No. 3 doubles, it was Lehman's Gabrela Harewood and Yasmin Samuels downing Natalia Martinez and Cassie Pratt of the Blue Angels 3-0.

The trend remained consistent when played switched over to singles, as the Lightning won all six singles sets. At No. 1 singles, it was Neville turning back Locke by a score of 10-2. No. 2 singles saw Peter defeat De Francesco 10-1. Harewood downed Daniel 10-1 at No. 3 singles, and Smith silenced Delnisha Baker 10-4. No. 5 singles saw Bhatia defeat Emily Clay 8-1 and Alexandria Reel defeated Britnie Anderson 10-1 at No. 6 singles.

The Lightning have earned the No. 4 seed in the 2009 CUNYAC Women's Tennis Tournament, and their opponent will be the No. 5th seeded Dolphins of the College of Staten Island – who like Lehman – finished 5-4 in conference play. The match will take place tomorrow afternoon at the APEX Tennis Courts, with start time scheduled for 3:00pm. The Lightning earned the No. 4 seed by essence of their 8-1 victory over the Dolphins back on September 29th.
