The Lehman College men's basketball team (3-6 Overall, 1-1 CUNYAC) suffered a loss at the hands of the SUNY Purchase Panthers (4-3 Overall, 2-2 skyline) Saturday afternoon in the second game of the 2009 CUNYAC Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at the APEX Center in the Bronx.
Despite the loss for Lehman College, the Lightning got great contributions from junior guard Xavier Garvin who led Lehman College with 24 points (12-15 FT) to go along with three rebounds and two assists. Newcomer Mathias Raggiotto had a great game as well, scoring 22 points (9-19 FG) to go along with eight rebounds, and Alain Dela Cruz chipped in with 13 points as well. Following the game, Head Coach Steven Schulman gave his thoughts on the day and the defeat.
“I just want to thank everybody who came out and supported a terrific cause while cheering on our team this afternoon,” Schulman said. “Cancer affects people every day, and any little bit that we can do to help bring awareness as an institution is terrific. In terms of the game, we definitely have adjustments to make and things to work on, so we'll take tomorrow off and get back to work early in the week as we prepare for William Paterson.”
In the victory for the Panthers of SUNY Purchase, five player scored in double figures. Marvin Billups scored 24 points (7-8 FG, 10-11 FT) while grabbing five rebounds. Also, it was Corey Orgias netting 20 points and snatching five rebounds while dishing five assists. In addition, Charles Thompson had 18 points and nine rebounds. Finally, it was Michael McNair and Justin Walters scoring 14 and 10 points, respectively.
SUNY Purchase out-rebounded the lightning by a small margin of 32-31. The Panthers committed 18 turnovers to Lehman's 14. SUNY Purchase spread the ball out well, dishing 13 assists on the day.
The Lightning will be back in action Thursday, December 17th as Lehman travels to Wayne, NJ to battle non-conference opponent William Paterson University, with game-time scheduled for 6:00pm.
