BASEBALL FALLS TO OLD WESTBURY 8-6 IN RAIN-SHORTENED NON-CONFERENCE AFFAIR

The SUNY Old Westbury Panthers (11-8 Overall, 6-3 Skyline) scored five runs in the fifth inning to defeat the Lightning of Lehman College (3-12 Overall, 1-3 CUNYAC), 8-5 in six innings at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex in Old Westbury. 

 

For the Panthers in the game, junior Albert Bevacqua was the offensive catalyst for Old Westbury, drilling a solo shot to left field to kick start a five-run fifth inning for the Panthers. Bevacqua finished 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and a stolen base.  Back-to-back doubles in the fifth inning by sophomore Emmanuel Mateo and freshman Ronnie Petito gave the Panthers the lead.  Mateo hit 1-for-3 with a run scored and Petito (1-for-1) drove in two runs and scored one.  Sophomore Ryan Blanco doubled to center field in the fifth to drive in Petito and finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored.    

 

Junior standout slugger Gilbert Garcia led the way for Lehman, swatting a triple and finishing 2-for-3 on the evening with three RBI and a run scored.  Bobby Villante also chipped in with a solid performance at the dish, finishing 2-for-3 with a triple with two runs scored.

 

For SUNY Old Westbury, it was freshman Biondis Vasquez (2-0) getting the victory, allowing five runs on six hits over five innings on the hill.  Vasquez registered three strikeouts and three walks before senior Jake Tauber notched his first save of the season with one inning of work.

 

For Lehman College, it was Brian Cubero suffering the loss after surrendering eight runs and 10 hits in five innings of work.  Cubero walked two and recorded three strikeouts. 

 

The Lightning will return to action Saturday afternoon as the team takes on the John Jay College Bloodhounds in a CUNYAC doubleheader at the South Field in the Bronx, with the first game getting underway at noon.
