Box Score
The Lehman College men's basketball team (8-18 Overall, 5-8 CUNYAC) entered the 2010 CUNYAC Tournament as the No. 7 seed, and the Lightning were eliminated by the number two seed and the defending champion Brooklyn College Bulldogs (20-6 Overall, 11-2 CUNYAC) by a score of 96-68 at the West Quad Gymnasium earlier this afternoon in Brooklyn, NY. With the victory, the Bulldogs advance to the CUNYAC semifinal round this Tuesday evening at City College of New York's Nat Holman Gymnasium, while the Lightning will now look towards the 2010-2011 season.
In the victory for the Bulldogs, it was Staten Island product Daniel Nisbett putting forth a tremendous effort by leading his squad with a team-high 20 points while connecting on seven of his 11 shots from the floor. Amil John also chipped in with 17 points, five rebounds, five steals, and five assists, and standout Thomas Guerin netted 15 points while snatching four rebounds, tallying four steals, and dishing three assists. Richard Jean-Baptiste added 10 points.
The primary differences in the game were the shooting percentage from the floor as well as the turnover differential. The Bulldogs connected on 52.9 percent of their shots for the afternoon (37-70) while holding the Lightning to just a 37.3 percent clip (22-59). Uncharacteristically, Lehman College committed 33 turnovers, while Brooklyn College committed just 19 miscues for the day.
Leading the way for the Lightning was senior Perry Daniel who completed his one-year Lehman College basketball career in style, posting a game-high 22 points (7-18 FG) to go along with four rebounds in 34 minutes of action. Jonathan DeJesus finished the season strong as he netted 14 points while grabbing 15 rebounds and tallying a pair of assists, and Alain Dela Cruz netted nine points while snatching seven rebounds and dishing five assists. Following the game, head coach Steven Schulman gave his thoughts.
“I felt that despite the final score, our team truly did play hard the entire game, and they left it all out there on the floor,” Schulman said. “The truth of the matter is, if you make mistakes against a team like the Bulldogs, they will make you pay for it. I was very happy with our energy and our fire today, but Brooklyn College just played a better ballgame. I'd like to wish the Bulldogs the best of luck the rest of the way, and I believe the guys on our team that will be returning for next year will take a lot of the things they learned from this season into our 2010-2011 campaign.”
The Lehman College men's basketball team finalized its season at 8-18 overall, a mark that included the team putting forth a 5-8 record in conference competition. The team only graduates one senior – Perry Daniel – so it's very likely that the core of the team will remain intact as the team prepares to look ahead to next season.
